Feather of Ma'at Earrings in Sterling Silver

$47.39

These are a pair handmade stylized feather earrings in sterling silver with a 5x7 mm malachite cabochon on the front, and on the back the glyph for the goddess Ma'at, the feather of truth, who was weighed on the scales with the soul of the dead to see if they were worthy to pass into the afterlife. You can choose stones you want from the options available. Feel free to message me for available options.

Maat or Ma'at refers to both the ancient Egyptian concepts of truth, balance, order, harmony, law, morality, and justice, and the personification of these concepts as a goddess regulating the stars, seasons, and the actions of both mortals and the deities, who set the order of the universe from chaos at the moment of creation. Her ideological opposite was Isfet, meaning injustice, chaos, violence or to do evil. Maat represents the ethical and moral principle that every Egyptian citizen was expected to follow throughout their daily lives. They were expected to act with honor and truth in manners that involve family, the community, the nation, the environment, and the gods.

In the Duat, the Egyptian underworld, the hearts of the dead were said to be weighed against her single "Feather of Ma'at", symbolically representing the concept of Maat, in the Hall of Two Truths. This is why hearts were left in Egyptian mummies while their other organs were removed, as the heart (called "ib") was seen as part of the Egyptian soul. If the heart was found to be lighter or equal in weight to the feather of Maat, the deceased had led a virtuous life and would go on to Aaru. Osiris came to be seen as the guardian of the gates of Aaru after he became part of the Egyptian pantheon and displaced Anubis in the Ogdoad tradition. A heart which was unworthy was devoured by the goddess Ammit and its owner condemned to remain in the Duat.

Yes I do, and usually it's 1-2 months to do depending on the time of the year and if I already have orders on my plate. I do try to keep you up to date on the progress and send photos. So ask away! Also note I don't take custom orders during the holiday season due to work overload!

What are the material used in the jewellery?

All the items I make are made in solid metal, not plated. The sterling silver, or .925 silver as some know it as, is 92.5% fine silver and 7.5% copper which is the classic sterling silver. No rhodium or nickle plating! The antique bronze is the classic bronze that the bronze age was named for. It contains 90% copper and 10% tin. I also offer to make jewellery in stainless steel or gold on special order and are made to order only.

Are there chains included?

Sadly no. The cost of sterling silver and bronze chains would end up raising the price of my jewellery, so in stead I sell them separately on my shop section for chains and engraving.

What is antique bronze? Will it turn my skin? And how do I care for it?

The antique bronze contains 90% copper and 10% tin. The bronze can turn your skin green due to the oxidization caused by the copper to the salt and sweat of your skin, but can be easily rectified with either clear enamel or the classic clear nail polish trick! As for cleaning, use liquid silver cleaner and a jewellers polishing cloth to make it shiny and new again.

How do you ship your jewellery?

I use ChitCats Express for all my shipping, and the prices are based on their prices. They are a courier company that uses USPS, so is cheaper than Canda Post. I rather not use other courier companies like FedEx our UPS because they charge the buyer a brokerage fee on top of duty and that sucks all around! If you would rather use them, let me know and I'll create a custom listing for you.

Will bronze change color?

Because of the copper content in the bronze, it will naturally develop a patina over time. The tarnish, or patina, is caused by a chemical reaction between the various metals in the alloy, and acids or other corrosive materials. Acids in the skin can cause uneven tarnish from contact with your skin. If you want to prevent tarnish, keep your bronze item stored in an area with low humidity and protected from dust and other corrosives and chemicals, like hand cream and house cleaning products. If you are storing the item, make sure it's dry and wrap it in plastic or put it in a plastic bag; the more airtight the better. Bronze can be varnished or lacquered, but this will have to be reapplied over time.
